John H. "Captain Jack" Sitter

John H. “Captain Jack” Sitter, 84, of Oshkosh, died Monday Feb. 1, 2010 at Park View Health Center. He was born on Feb. 13, 1925 in Oshkosh, the son of Anthony and Beatrice Babbitz Sitter.  In 1956 he married Marlyn Wolf in Oshkosh. She preceded him in death on April 27, 1980. 

He was in the United States Coast Guard from 1943 until 1946. He then received his bachelor of arts from Lake Forest College in 1950, his bachelor of science from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1958 and his masters in 1963 from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and University of Wisconsin-Superior. He owned a furniture store from 1952 until 1958 and then was a teacher in Ripon until 1981. He traveled around the world four times, he loved boating and that is where he gained the nickname “Captain Jack,” and he enjoyed skiing and camping. 

He is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Valis of Oshkosh and Toni Woods of La Jolla, Calif.; four grandchildren, John Schneider, Amber Schneider, Steve Woods, and Stephan Valis II, and John’s girlfriend of 25 years Alice Manteuful. He was preceded in death by his wife.
